Do You Rest Your Brain?

Yes, another one of my silly questions, however, one that is truly valid. Do you ever take the time to rest your brain?

As far as I can tell most of us don’t think about doing this. Our brain is ‘on’ 24 – 7, even when we are sleeping. How tiring that must be. Think about your eyes having to be open ‘all the time’, or your arms having to carry something ‘all of the time‘, or your legs having to walk ‘all the time’… well you get my point. What might happen to the rest of our body if we did not take the time to lay down at night and give it time to rest and re-energize? How well would your body be able to fully function the next day? Eventually your arms and legs, hands, feet and eyes would become too exhausted to function properly. Do you see where I am headed with this?

So why do we not take the time to allow our brains to rest when it goes on overload?

I do have a simple solution if you are willing to try. Meditate! That’s all… take 5 min. out of your day and sit quietly with your eyes closed and let go of all thought. Give your mind a rest. It certainly deserves that time away from full blow thought!

Ok, not everyone has an easy time with this and some even think they have to climb a mountain and sit in a yoga position in order to do this… nope, you don’t.

Try this, and then let me know how it works for you. I believe you ‘will’ be able to do this and that you ‘will’ feel more refreshed and alert after you work with it for a few days.

Sit in a quiet space and light a small candle. Then for the next few minutes do nothing but gaze at that flame. If a thought pops in your head, erase that thought from your mind. See a blank white space in your head. If another thought pops in, erase that thought, and so on and so on. Eventually your mind will recognize what you are doing and this will become easier. 5 min is not a long time to be kind to your mind. And there will come a time when you won’t need the candle flame. You will be able to do this anywhere you have 5 min. to work with. If you want an extra boost for your brain, before you begin your meditation take 3 very deep, slow breaths and let all of your stress flow out of your body.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the most difference.
Let me know how it goes!
